Skittles lost her owner and was surrendered to a shelter by the family. Sadly, no one in the family wanted to keep her. She is eight years old, overweight, and her hair was matted all over her back. She has known only one owner and one home her whole life. Not only did she lose the person who loved her, but she found herself sitting in a cold kennel at the Fresno shelter. To make matters worse, the shelter wanted to euthanize this sweet cat within the week. Unfortunately, shelters are overcrowded and underfunded, and too many adoptable animals, cats and dogs, are being euthanized although they have done nothing wrong and could have had long, happy lives if only someone wanted them.

Skittles

When Skittles entered the shelter, she was sweet and loving. But the stress of losing her owner and finding herself in an alien environment took its toll on her. She became frightened, and showed her distress and fear by hissing. The staff was told to use caution around her, and they labelled her unadoptable.

But when we removed her from her kennel at the shelter, she was easy-going and did not display the behaviors the shelter said they were dealing with. This is not unusual. Many animals find the noisy, crowded conditions at shelters frightening, and either withdraw and shutdown, or express their fear by being defensive. Their behaviors are a result of being in a shelter, and once they leave the environment, they can once again be the sweet, playful creatures they really are.

After we pulled Skittles, we took her to another rescue. They have a grooming salon for animals. Poor Skittles had to have the hair on her back shaved because she had so many mats that were so badly twisted, they were pulling her skin up. She was very sweet while she was being groomed, as if she knew everyone was trying to help her and was thankful to the people taking care of her by removing the painful mats.

Dear Skittles is quite a large lady, but with proper care and diet could be a healthier weight. Right now, she would need a very large, strong lap to be a lap kitty, but that could easily change. She may be a big girl, but she also has a big heart full of love and no place to put it. She so wants a new person to share that love with. She is a total sweetheart who loves to talk to people, so be ready for a conversation! Who know what tales she has to tell.

Skittles is up for adoption and waiting for her new forever home with you.

  1. What is it with families? Don’t they realise the cat would be dead within a week? Don’t they care?May karma look on them with her customary justice.
