Dillworth was weird. He once complained there were not enough turtle races or turtle racing enthusiasts in the world. We were both enjoying a cup of coffee at Café Newburg. Now, I know Dillworth pretty well, and I wrote this off as another one of his ideas just to get attention. “You’re kidding, right?”

Who would expect a turtle to change the course of a marriage? Susan M. Tellem, RN in Malibu, California, gifted her husband with two tortoises for his birthday. She found there was no national tortoise rescue so she and husband, Marshall, started one and have rescued over 3,000 turtles and tortoises since then.

I was playing in the surf on the beach in Santa Barbara. The morning fog had cleared and it was a perfect day. Cool in the shade of the giant eucalyptus trees and warm in the sun. I was glad I had gotten away by myself and not had to drag my sister along. She could be a real pain in the butt when she whined. Today I was free.
