It is Halloween season again and there are so many places in the Valley to go have fun! One of which is Frightmare Farms. We took a moment to chat with one of their owners to learn a bit more about this haunt in Merced. You can also find more fun Halloween things to do in KRL’s Halloween Fun in the Valley article.

A pumpkin-orange moon hung low on the dark horizon, peeking over the distant foothills as it rose. It lit up the fields in an otherworldly glow as we drove down a desolate country road, toward the white-hot lights piercing the darkness.

It’s October, and that means another Halloween Must-Watch Movie List!
With all the horror movies out there, it can be extremely hard to find something good and scary to watch. Well, if you’re looking for something good, and scary, it might be a good idea to kick off your Halloween movie binge with a particularly creepy gem by Guillermo del Toro: Mama.

If the title stood out, then one could turn their focus to another gem mostly unknown to American audiences: Haute Tension or, for those who don’t parle le francias, High Tension, directed by Alexandre Aja, of The Hills Have Eyes fame.

“Come on Uncle Jack give me something. I’ll do the lamest stuff. Just let me prove I can do it. Please Uncle Jack.”

“Evie, help me. I think…I don’t…” I struggled to understand Nora’s words through the poor phone connection and her hysterical sobs. “I’m afraid he’s…” Why was she calling me?

When you go to The Grove Haunt in Sanger it’s not just about the scary attractions, it’s also about what’s going on in the Midway–which is essentially what it sounds like–it’s right in the middle of everything. While I haven’t had the chance to make it out this year, I went several times last year, as my daughter was working there, and I really enjoyed hanging out in the Midway. There are some cool fire pits to warm yourself by, some entertainment, shops and fun food.

The rest of this month KRL will be publishing several short stories, mostly mystery, that have a scary or Halloween feel or setting to them. A Time To Bury The Past by Nancy Means Wright is set in a cemetery which seemed like the perfect place to start! It was originally published in 2005 in Windchill, an anthology of mystery shorts from Level Best Books.

Bloody Mary is the third of three original mystery/fantasy Halloween short stories going up this week! Enjoy! This one is a bit creepier and more a PG 13 rating for some strong language.

In the middle of the Bronx, situated on a triangular shaped spit of land named Poe Park, bordered by three busy streets, sits the last residence of Edgar Allan Poe. This month will mark the 162nd year since his death and yet this clapboard cottage still stands and is now under the custodial care of the Bronx Historical Society. In 1980 the cottage was placed on the National Register of Historical Places.

In July, a 20-acre parcel of land in Parlier was nothing but rows of plum trees, but that was before Mike Callahan began transforming it into a Halloween event unlike any other in the Central Valley.
