Roger Rocka’s Dinner Theater

by Lorie Lewis Ham

I have been in love with the story of King Arthur and Camelot for as long as I can remember. I grew up with the movie, and have seen the show on stage three times now. It is a story and world that I adore, and a musical full of fun songs and characters. When I heard that the Good Company Players were producing the show this season, I couldn’t wait to see it! Camelot is based on the book The Once and Future King by T.H. White. It is a classic Lerner and Loewe musical.

The classic Lerner and Loewe musical My Fair Lady opened at Roger Rocka’s Dinner Theater on July 21, but I wasn’t able to make it to the show until last Thursday. This show was well worth the wait!

On stage now at Roger Rocka’s Dinner Theatre, the Good Company Players bring us 9 to 5 The Musical, based on the 1980 Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin, Dolly Parton, Dabney Coleman film about workers turning the tables on a horrible boss. The movie was directed by Colin Higgins (who wrote Harold and Maude) from his screenplay and Patricia Resnick’s story. Resnick adapted the script for the stage, and Parton wrote new songs to go along with her title tune from the film.

A Christmas Story: the musical has come to Roger Rocka’s Dinner Theatre, and the Good Company Players have unwrapped a nostalgic present filled with good cheer through January 10. The movie with Darren McGavin, Melinda Dillon, and Peter Billingsley is now a seasonal staple, based on memory-stories from In God We Trust: All Others Pay Cash by Jean Shepherd, who voiced the film’s narration and was a writer of the screenplay.

From Oliver Twist by Charles Dickens, Lionel Bart fashioned the musical Oliver! which opened in London in 1960, toured the USA in 1962, and opened on Broadway in 1963. Now, it is a Good Company Players production at Roger Rocka’s Dinner Theater through July 19.

Oscar Hammerstein II and Richard Rodgers were major forces in musical theatre from the ’40s to the ’60s, penning the words and music for Oklahoma!, Carousel, The King and I, The Sound of Music, and… South Pacific, now a Good Company Players production at Roger Rocka’s Dinner Theater through May 17.

If you are looking for a fun night at the theatre then you won’t want to miss Crazy For You, currently on stage at Roger Rocka’s Dinner Theatre in Fresno. This show is filled with wonderful old Gershwin songs we all know and love! Crazy For You is a 1992 musical largely based on the Gershwin’s 1930 musical Crazy Girl, but incorporates songs from several other productions as well. It won a Tony for Best Musical in 1992.

Last weekend was a weekend of musical revues for us at KRL, Saturday night was Side by Side by Sondheim, and Sunday we saw Smokey Joe’s Cafe at Roger Rocka’s, and both shows were a lot of fun.

You don’t expect a 134-year-old musical to rock a theatre, but the Good Company Players’ production of The Pirates of Penzance rocks Roger Rocka’s Dinner Theater…with laughter.

Once upon a time, a princess met her prince charming…no wait, that’s another story. In Shrek The Musical, the princess meets an ogre–an ogre who can sing.

Imagine a big, goofy 1959 musical where the cast and crew are dropping like flies. That’s Curtains, the Good Company Players’ production now at Roger Rocka’s Dinner Theater through September 8.
