Reedley Opera House

by Larry Ham

I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change is one of the most honored musicals to ever run Off Broadway. In fact, it is the second longest running musical Off Broadway, and has garnered several prestigious awards. The book and lyrics were written by Joe DiPietra, and the music was written by Jimmy Roberts. The show is currently being performed by the River City Theater Company at the Reedley Opera House.

It started as a Christmas card for friends. It found its way to Hollywood, where Frank Capra turned it into a movie that didn’t make much money. Years later, it was picked up by television stations, and it suddenly became a Christmas classic, one of America’s most-beloved films…..It’s a Wonderful Life. Reedley’s River City Theatre Company has mounted an adaptation on the Reedley Opera House stage through December 16. It’s light fun and some great moments.

Once upon a time in the ’50s, a white guy named Huey wandered into a Black music club in Memphis, Tennessee, because he was captivated by the sounds he heard.

In 2000, while we were all paying attention to other things, a musical called Swing! ran for 461 performances on Broadway and picked up five Tony nominations. Reedley’s River Theatre Company has picked up this blast from the past and put it on stage through March 13 at the Reedley Opera House.

Long, long ago, in a gas station far, far away, you drove up to the pump and a bell rang. A squad of smartly uniformed young men scurried out, and the work commenced. They pumped your gas, checked your water and oil, washed and squeegeed your windshield, and checked the air in your tires, while you relaxed in your car. You didn’t have to lift a finger.

In 2001, Mel Brooks turned his 1968 movie The Producers into a Broadway musical. It was a smash hit. In 2007, Brooks worked the same magic on 1974’s Young Frankenstein with the same writing partner, Thomas Meehan, and it ran on Broadway for two years. And now…..the River City Theatre Company brings Young Frankenstein to life on the Reedley Opera House stage through July 30.

Some families say “I love you.” Some families don’t. Some say it, but without words. In Joe DiPietro’s Over the River and Through the Woods, now playing at the Reedley Opera House, love is expressed in food. You feed the ones you love. Lasagna or a sandwich, it’s all love.

A jukebox musical is a stage show put together from previously released material from a singer (Buddy: The Buddy Holly Musical), songwriter(s) (Mama Mia!—songs by ABBA), or era (Rock of Ages—80s glam rock). River City Theatre Company fills the Reedley Opera House with Ring of Fire: the Songs of Johnny Cash through February 26.

This has been a slow month for Valley theatre. If you have already seen the shows at Roger Rocka’s and 2nd Space, there’s not much else to see in January. Well the Reedley River City Theatre Co. has a cure for that–a way to see pieces of a ton of different shows all at once–Legends: Lullaby of Broadway opened this past weekend!

This weekend I experienced a theatre marathon, seeing three shows that all fit in perfectly with the Halloween season! First was Dracula at COS, then The Rocky Horror Show at the Ice House in Visalia, and lastly the suspenseful thriller Wait Until Dark at the Reedley Opera House.

The musical West Side Story opened last weekend at the Reedley Opera House, presented by Reedley’s River City Theatre Co. This cast has the distinction of being made up primarily of high school and college students, making them closer to the actual age of the characters they are playing, giving this show an extra bit of realism.
