An amazing and multitalented artist has devoted his life to bringing change to the hearts of the California Central Valley and well beyond. His name is Rick Alonzo, and he has been incorporating his talents of painting, martial arts and gymnastic skills to preach the gospel of Christ as well as hope, love and racial reconciliation to places such as schools, inner cities, juvenile halls and Christian crusades since 1992.

This Valley is filled with more than its share of talented performers. Here at KRL we would like to spotlight some of these actors, directors, writers, singers, etc and give them a moment to be recognized for their abilities and successes. We would also like to let our readers know about some wonderful talent in their own backyards that they have the chance to enjoy.

Michelle Caban has been an Attendance Secretary at Reedley High School for five years, but has worked for the Kings Canyon Unified School District for eight. “I started as a sub for a teacher’s aide, and an EL (English Language) Tech working with students in their language assessment. I’ve also worked as a clerk typist at the Adult School and as an assistant to the KC Kids program. I saw an opening for the high school, applied, and have been enjoying it ever since.”

I like music from different countries and my favorite is an alternative duo from Russia called t.A.T.U. These two women express all their feelings and cravings through melodies. Lena Katina and Yulia Volkova form the group t.A.T.u. These two girls have been friends since they were babies, and when they became teenagers decided that a singing group would be the best way to get out of Russia.

Healthy eating. What does that mean anymore? Fat used to be the culprit, then carbohydrates, then calories, now it’s additives. I’m going to go with additives for now. Why? Because it’s the new thing? No; because, as someone who believes in science, it makes the most sense.

I had the pleasure of interviewing Loomis and the Lust and seeing them perform in Fresno. KRL will be keeping an eye on this young rock band as their success continues. Their music style is old rock with a bit of CA sunshine.

Social Capital

FROM THE Downtown Doings SECTIONS

by Rocky Rogers

Have you ever heard the term ‘social capital’? It’s not something the typical citizen would use in a conversation, that’s for sure. You most likely have heard the terms volunteer, civic duty, social events, and visitation used at some point. Social capital captures those ideas…

I can’t pinpoint exactly when food became my oldest frenemy. I come from the “Clean your plate” club, was a member of the “You can’t have a cookie till you eat all your vegetables” association, and sat on the board of “You’d be so pretty if you weren’t fat” INC.

There are few sounds more beautiful than voices blended in perfect harmony performing a cappella, and it is not something you hear very often anymore. This is what Michael Angel thought when he put the group together. “I had not heard of an a cappella group in the area…”
