Sarah Thompson will be leading a Nonviolent Action Workshop this Friday, November 3 from 6:30-9 p.m. at the Reedley Peace Center, 1208 L Street in Reedley, and at Fresno Pacific University on November 4 at North Hall on the campus from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Over the last five years Sarah has trained people of faith and moral courage in nonviolent direct action preparation. Most recently she was the Executive Director of Christian Peacemaker Teams.

Every Tuesday at twelve forty-five, the Reedley High Students for Peace Club volunteers their lunch time to better understand the problems of the world and figure out how they can do their part to help. The students, ranging from freshmen to seniors, come from all backgrounds, each carrying differing opinions and views. But all this is left at the door as each student shares the same dream of curing the injustices of the world, one step at a time.

Several weeks ago I had the pleasure of hearing peace advocate John Dear speak at the Reedley Peace Center. Afterwards, I was able to sit down with him for a few minutes and interview him about his efforts toward peace. Here is that very interesting interview–our Earth Day issue seemed somehow appropriate time to post this.

In a society with an ever increasing burden on our Criminal Justice System, we are pushed toward finding solutions that will enhance our communities, not continue to allow them to deteriorate. The Reedley Police Department has taken the step to look toward alternate solutions while embracing the philosophy of restorative justice and community as a whole.

When Jesus’ disciples, the men who travelled together with him for three years to learn under his tutelage, asked him to teach them how to pray, he gave them a very interesting model prayer. It’s one that has been prayed by many throughout the centuries, though I fear that many pray the words without really grasping what they mean.
