As you may know if you have read any of my Pet Rescue Mysteries from Berkley Prime Crime, each has focused on a particular theme involving animal rescues. My intent is to entertain readers with a fun cozy mystery, but I also hope that I can inform them about a different aspect of rescues that they may not be familiar with.
KRL reviewed a lot of really good and great books in 2013, but we decided to give our best shot at choosing our top 5 of the year--some of us cheated a little, but here are our choices! And if you are an author who is not on the list, take heart--like I said, they were all good books!
“There’s something about the car.” That first line in Gary Phillips’ introduction to this collection of car-themed short stories by the Los Angeles Chapter of Sisters in Crime perfectly encapsulates the enigmatic atmosphere and introspection that so often occurs in our beloved automobiles. The close confines of a car and hours spent in traffic force us to either contemplate one’s own thoughts or have deeply intimate conversations with a seatmate without the requirement of uncomfortable eye contact. Some of our most memorable experiences are associated with our cars, and this is reflected in this wonderful compilation of short stories of love, hate and violence, all occurring within our vehicles.

The compassionate and lively Lauren Vancouver is back in this third volume of the Pet Rescue Series by Linda O. Johnston. Lauren is the director of HotRescues, a no kill pet shelter in Southern California. She and her crew do what they can to save as many animals as possible.
Book covers are interesting things. They have to entice you into wanting to buy that book with promises of what lies within, yet they shouldn’t give away the plot. Satisfying both requirements is a delicate task, like giving a massage to a porcupine.
