Fresno Folklore Society Concerts May 2013

May 11 The Stumbleweeds, Back In the Valley, Richfield, Heartland Harvest at the Wolk Garden 7:30PM Show All Ages 5PM Potluck Bring a lawn chair and refreshments

The Stumbleweeds, with Guitarist Rich Severson and singer Karen Marguth, bring a new all original attitude to Western Music. They are fresh from the Fresno Grand Opry III.

Back In the Valley: It’s all in the name… expecting success to come from just about anywhere except the simple California central valley of their roots, several of the band members scattered for a number of years across the USA. But the vortex that is Fresno would not release its hold and each returned to find themselves, their souls, their music and each other; so they are Back in the Valley, home, and a return to what inspired every one of them to pick up instruments in the first place: Americana music.

Richfield plays a style of music that has been considered “California Country”, a blend of Americana, Folk, and Rock. On May 11th, Ted Nunes and Jordan Rosen (pedal steel) will take the stage in a stripped down version that features the Acoustic guitar and pedal steel.

Heartland Harvest is FFS board members Linda Guerrero and Bill Lehr playing old time music.

May 24 Pearl Django with Karen Marguth at Franks Place 7:30PM $10 ADV/FFS $15 Door All Ages

With eleven albums and a performance history spanning almost two decades, Pearl Django endures as one of the most highly regarded Hot Club style groups working today. Although the band’s roots are firmly in the music made famous by Django Reinhardt and Stephan Grappelli, its extensive repertoire includes traditional jazz classics and original compositions. Pearl Django has performed at festivals, dances and nightspots throughout the U.S. and abroad. The band’s signature style is marked by pristine and dexterous string work, colors of Bal Musette, the steady pulse of rhythm guitar and an unmistakable swing that delights audiences of all musical sensibilities.

Fresno’s own Karen Marguth, a jazz singer with several albums available, will open the show.

“Pearl Django play(s) gypsy jazz…and they do it with such verve, skill and pleasure that they’re pretty much irresistible to jazz and non-jazz listeners alike.”
