My mother would have loved the painting on the cover of this book. A Christmas card scene of snow, greenery, a horse and sleigh in front of a lovely building in the countryside; the drawing would have been a centerpiece on our mantle. My father did not care for snow scenes. He said that he had shoveled too much of it to enjoy looking at it.

Okay, I admit it, anything that says ‘chocolate’ on it has my immediate attention. You do not need to be a chocoholic, like me, to enjoy this book. This happens to be my favorite type of mystery, one in which a series of tragic incidents in the past cause a chain reaction resulting in murder in the present.

I asked for this book to review. Well, all right, there was some begging and whining involved. I really wanted to read this novel – I spent more than my share of time in dead-end jobs in my college days and I was fascinated by the concept of a private investigator who takes dead-end jobs to gather information. People in the bottom jobs often know a great deal about what is going on. Agatha Christie used the principle, on more than one occasion that servants, waiters, cleaners and other people who provide small services can get away with murder because no one notices them.
