Main Street
This shopping district bills itself as “a world away from the ordinary, a block away from the beach.” It’s about a mile long walk from Pico Boulevard south to Navy Street.

Fette Sou (fat pig in German) is a BBQ joint wedged between a graffiti scrawled apartment building and the parking lot of Frank’s Auto Repair Shop in New York. I’d describe it as a Brooklyn Hipster hangout with an attitude of ‘we’ll do it our way’.

Are you planning a weekend trip to Morro Bay, Cayucos or Cambria any time soon? If so, why not plan to spend a little extra time on a short side trip to the tiny community of Parkfield, California: a town with the dubious distinction of being the “earthquake capitol of the world!”

We had one of those vacations that you rarely hear about these days. The flight from San Francisco to Phoenix was tolerable, almost pleasant, even though I was chosen for an inside-out photo op by security.
We spent one night in Phoenix and then we hit the road north to Sedona and her beautiful “other worldly” red rock formations. Along the way we stopped at Montezuma’s Castle National Park where we were awestruck by the 1000 year-old ruins of the Sinaqua people.

I haven’t been camping in over twenty years. I have pictures of the kids, filthy from head to toe, as proof that I did go camping at least once. But the experience was so traumatic—all that dirt and those bugs and stuff—I swore the next time I went camping it would be at the Marriott—and I’d live without room service.

I attended a play called Scrooge, based on A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens on Sunday December 26, showing at Cabrillo Stage Theatre in Aptos, near Santa Cruz from December 17-30, 2010. The play is directed by Andrew Ceglio who was born in San Jose and now lives in Capitola.

Last Sunday I made my first “Trek to the Nation’s Christmas Tree”, something I had intended to do for several years. The bus ride from Sanger up to the Sierras and into the snow-covered world of Kings Canyon National Park was breathtaking.

One of the beauties of living in California is the rich bounty our soil produces. California generates over 350 crops, several of which are grown only in California! So how is it that we convince ourselves to settle for the quality of produce typical of a grocery store?

Camping At “The Indians”

No doubt, the first pioneers to crest the Sierra Nevada rushed our great Valley with ground-kissing vows to never brave those hills again. Aside from a few rebel jaunts in search of Big Foot and that whole gold rush thing that saved California from a budget impasse, surely they were content to stick to the Valley floor.
