Every band member in the Reedley High School Pirate marching band knows that the last Saturday in October is a big day. That is always the day that is dedicated to the Selma Band Review, the most important band review for our band! We know to mark that day on our calendars and get plenty of rest the evening before, have to memorize our show songs and choreography, and we practice for weeks.

Seeing as my mom and I travel every summer, I wasn’t surprised last fall when my mom asked me where I would like to go for the upcoming summer vacation. I didn’t surprise her either when I suggested going to Russia, or more specifically my birthplace. My mom knew that at one point in time I would want to go back to my roots, so she had already done some research. Much to her disappointment though, she wasn’t able to find enough information about the town where I was born.

These poems were mostly written by local teens who won our May Teen Talk poetry contest. The contest is generally open to anyone age 14-19 in the Kings River area, but when we got an entry from Texas we thought that was so cool we included hers in the winners this month. Take advantage of this chance to have your poem published online and available for everyone to read! Any subject or type of poem will be considered with 3 to 5 poems selected at the end of most months. Since it’s Memorial Day weekend one of the winners we picked is a Memorial Day poem she wrote last year.

I love reading books, and one of my favorite books is Bethany Hamilton’s autobiography, Soul Surfer. Now I can also say that one of my favorite movies is the big-screen adaption, which goes by the same name. The main reason why I consider this movie to be one of my favorites, is that it exemplifies the international inspiration Bethany Hamilton has been since her shark attack.

If you were to walk up to any one of my friends or classmates at Reedley High School and asked them to describe me they would probably say that I’m a nerd. As disturbing as that answer might first appear to be, it’s quite accurate! I am a NERD!!!

Just like at other high schools, fall is the busiest time of the year at Reedley High School, with football games, rallies, and band performances. And at all of these gathering, there is one thing you are sure to find — school spirit! In fact, our Pirate pride is what gives so many students the motivation to be involved with school activities.

KRL asked our teen staff to share their favorite things about Thanksgiving, along with some of their favorite memories. We’d love to hear some of yours as well!

Where did you go to school? I bet you went to a school in Reedley, or at least somewhere in the Valley. You’ve gone to the same school as generations before you and the generations that are yet to come. You’ve probably even had the some of the same friends that you had as a child. Same here!

These poems were written by local teens who won our October Teen Talk poetry contest. Many of this month’s poems tie into Halloween in some way at least with some sort of a dark edge. The contest is open to anyone age 14-19.

Last week I watched an assembly at my school regarding something called “Rachel’s Challenge”, and it’s become something that is truly now a major part of my life. Rachel Scott was the first victim of the 1999 shooting at Columbine High School, which swept the nation in a blanket of sadness and remorse.

These six poems were written by local teens and kick off our monthly Teen Talk poetry contest, open to anyone age 14-19 in the Kings River area.
