Many of us experience periods of sadness, apathy and anxiety. In fact, many people have passing thoughts of causing harm to ourselves. Suicidal thoughts are not unusual, but they can become dangerous if they are persistent and pervasive. Although, it can be a difficult topic to discuss, candid conversations about suicidal thoughts can be lifesaving.

On October 3, 2004, seventy-five people gathered in Fresno, California to hold a prayer vigil for a missing 16-year old girl. I’d seen these vigils on the news—pictures of a smiling teenager, Mom begging for information, candles lighting up the night, and volunteers handing out flyers. I wasn’t watching this scene unfold on the 6:00 news, however. The face on the flyer belonged to my daughter.

The ideas inherent in psychology have been around for thousands of years. In around 400 BCE, Socrates was concerned with the health and nature of the soul. The field of counseling emerged more recently, gaining traction in the 1940’s and 50’s and gaining national recognition by the creation of Division 17 by the American Psychological Association which focused on the practice and practicality of counseling psychology.

When severe, unanticipated changes in mood occur, it may be time to look for another explanation. Bipolar disorder, formerly manic-depression, is a mood disorder affecting about two percent of the population.

There is a one of a kind national organization that combines many volunteers and endless hours of training to provide youth with resources of ending suicide of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and question (LGBTQ) youth community. This great organization, The Trevor Project, was founded by three individuals 13 years ago who did not intentionally set out to become the first and only nationwide, 24/7 crisis and suicide prevention lifeline for LGBTQ youth.
