Football season is in full swing, so I was trying to think of someone to interview who would have a unique perspective on what is unquestionably America’s favorite sport. Then it occurred to me – why not interview the one without whom we could not even have a game? No, not the referee. We could play the game without him, although trusting the players to call their own penalties is somewhat akin to asking a four year old to guard the cookie jar.

What a difference a week makes! A week ago, the Reedley College Tigers were reeling after being crushed by San Mateo 48-14 for their second straight defeat to open the season. But the Tigers got a lot of things straightened out in the ensuing week, and clobbered the Cabrillo College Seahawks 58-7 Saturday night at Reedley High school Stadium.

The Reedley College Tigers opened the 2011 football season Saturday night with a 41-33 loss to Foothill College at Reedley High School Stadium. In most cases a season opening loss would be cause for concern, and there’s no doubt head coach Randy Whited was unhappy to start 0-1, but there were a lot of positives to be taken from the game for the Tigers.

Football season is almost here! For a sports fan like me, those are great words to hear. The Reedley College Tigers will begin their season at home September tenth, when they host Foothill College at seven p.m. Head Coach Randy Whited recently answered a few questions regarding the upcoming season.

If you’re like me, you like familiarity. I like knowing when I turn on the TV at a certain time, the show I expect to see will be there. I like driving the same route to work every day. If you’re a Reedley College Football fan, and you also like familiarity, you know that when you go to a Tiger home game, you’re going to hear a familiar voice on the P.A. speaker. Paul Mitchell has been the voice of the Tigers since 1953, and he’s still going strong at the age of eighty.

A give-away day at Yankee Stadium is a pretty special occasion though quite a few trinkets get handed out during the baseball season. I’m sure that those folks who attend the games regularly must have a large collection of bobble head dolls, beach towels with the Yankee logo, cold cup sleeves, key rings; really there’s no end to the variety of merchandise that is handed out periodically.

Harmon Killebrew died a couple of weeks ago, and it got me thinking about how much baseball has changed in the last four decades. For those of you too young to remember, Harmon Killebrew was an outstanding hitter for the Washington nationals and Minnesota Twins in the fifties and sixties. He was known for a powerful home run swing, and it is assumed by most experts that it is his image that adorns the official logo of Major League Baseball. But he was much more than a prodigious home run hitter. He was also a true gentleman who treated teammates, the media, and the fans with great respect and kindness.

With gas and ticket prices what they are now you practically have to take out a loan to go to a Major League baseball game to see the Giants, Dodgers, or whoever your favorite team is. And with the current economy, it’s hard to even consider spending that kind of money. So if you have an itch to attend a baseball game, why not try Minor League baseball and check out the Visalia Rawhide. They are right here in our own backyard and far more affordable.

There’s an old and true adage in Baseball, that pitching wins championships. It’s been proven over and over again through the years, and that’s why the pitching coach is one of the most important parts of a baseball team. On the professional level, the pitching coach at the lower minor league level makes a huge impact on the development of an organization’s prize prospects, and that’s why the Visalia Rawhide have entrusted their pitchers to Doug Drabek.

It’s that time of year again. When the smell of spring is in the air I get all excited waiting to hear those first cracks of the major league baseball bats. The weather might still be a bit unpredictable but rain or shine the baseball season starts the first week in April. There are maybe a dozen major league players that I like to watch, and I cheer the demise of a few teams I consider rivals to my hometown boys, but there’s only one yummy treat I think about when it comes to baseball. Cracker Jacks.

Have you ever fantasized about being the manager of a major league baseball team, and sending Albert Pujols up to the plate with the game on the line? Or sending Drew Brees out to throw the winning touchdown pass in the Super Bowl? Well, a lot of people have and that explains the phenomenal popularity of fantasy sports.

Ok, I know, I know, when I started writing about sports for Kings River Life, I said I was going to accentuate the positive. But I have something that’s been bugging me for a long time, and it’s time to get it off my chest.
