Author Thomas Wolfe wrote a novel titled You Can’t Go Home Again. And for many people, that’s true. But for former Clovis High/Fresno City College/Fresno State baseball star Garrett Weber, Wolfe’s sentiment doesn’t hold true. Garrett Weber has come home, and he couldn’t be happier.

With baseball season upon us I thought I’d review one of the few baseball movies I’ve ever seen, American Pastime, which is about a Japanese baseball team that forms within an internment camp.

If there’s one thing baseball has over the other major sports, it’s tradition. Yeah, football, basketball and hockey all have traditions, but they’re not as….. well, traditional as baseball. Opening day has red white and blue bunting hanging from the railings at every stadium. Fans of every team have genuine hope in April that this will be the year their team wins it all.

Saturday, December 18th, 2010 was a pretty normal day for Laine Brown. A week before Christmas in her junior year at Immanuel High School, Laine was playing in a basketball game at the Farmersville tournament. As was always the case, she was hustling up the floor, ready to knock the ball away from an opponent, when the opponent suddenly stopped, and they collided.

For sports fans, 2011 was an amazing, ridiculous and frustrating year. Choosing the top ten sports stories of the year was something like choosing the ten best tasting Christmas cookies my wife (and editor) baked over the holidays – there were a lot to choose from! But here, in no particular order, are my top ten local and national sports stories of 2011.

Last Friday we attended our first Fresno Monsters hockey game of the season and I was reminded what a great night out it is for the family. Hockey may be more popular in colder parts of the country and in places like Canada, but it’s a great sport that really deserves more attention right here.

Immanuel High School has a rich sports tradition, and the school’s basketball program has been especially successful in the past decade. Any coach who steps into the head coaching spot for Immanuel is stepping into high expectations, and C.J. Haydock is the new man on the hot seat.

It’s always a risk to place high expectations on something. It’s especially risky when you place those high expectations on yourself. Joshua Andrews did that, and the results were amazing.

As the football season winds down, there’s not a whole lot left to say about the season for the Reedley College Tigers. Saturday’s 41-7 loss to College of the Sequoias was a repeat of the other eight losses the Tigers have suffered this year: poor defense, spotty offense and a lopsided loss.

The Reedley College Tigers suffered their fifth straight loss Saturday night, falling to the Modesto Junior College Pirates 56-24.

The Reedley College Tigers were looking to turn their fortunes around at home Saturday afternoon after three consecutive road losses, but it didn’t work out that way – not even close. The Tigers were blown out by San Joaquin Delta 52-7 at Reedley High School Stadium.

The Reedley College Tigers lost their Valley Conference opener Saturday afternoon in Rocklin, falling to the Sierra College Wolverines 42-13. With the loss, the Tigers were all but eliminated from post season bowl eligibility.

The Reedley College Tigers finished up their pre-conference schedule Saturday night in Salinas, as they fell to Hatrnell College 27-20 in overtime. Certainly the c=score is an important part of the story, and most people would say it’s the only thing that matters, but that’s not the case with this game.

There’s not a lot to be said about the Reedley College football game this past Saturday night. Well, there’s plenty that could be said, but suffice it to say, it was a bad night for the Tiger defense, as they gave up 76 points in losing to West Hills, 76-44, dropping their season record to 1-3.
