If you’re like me, you like familiarity. I like knowing when I turn on the TV at a certain time, the show I expect to see will be there. I like driving the same route to work every day. If you’re a Reedley College Football fan, and you also like familiarity, you know that when you go to a Tiger home game, you’re going to hear a familiar voice on the P.A. speaker. Paul Mitchell has been the voice of the Tigers since 1953, and he’s still going strong at the age of eighty.

As I sat to enjoy this year’s Reedley High School graduation, it was different for me this time. I wasn’t watching just as a journalist or a drama mom who knew these kids through RHS shows, I was watching as a mom. My daughter, Jessica, graduated this year and it was quite the different feeling.

As university students in a time of economic instability, we are constantly faced with the harsh reality that jobs are often hard to come by upon graduation. Stories of graduates from top schools, highly educated but jobless for their first and second years out of college have been all too common in our recent news media. This raises the question of whether it is better to seek a job directly out of college, or to go on and pursue a graduate degree in hopes that upon completion, the job market will be more welcoming.

Reedley High has been full of busy Pirates. These last few months of the school year have been anything but relaxing for students. Students involved in the drama club to student council have had weeks and weekends filled with events to handle. From prom to Powder Puff, Pirates show their dedication in making the last few months of the year the best ones. Seniors are preparing for the June 10th graduation while the rest of the school gets ready for summer break and the fresh start of a new year.

Music, laughter, joy, and friendship: that’s what choir is. Choir, to me, is the most fun a person can have in their 4 years of high school. You learn fun music with your friends. You make fun of Choir teacher Randy Lepp. You dance at the end of the year for the final concert. You go on trips to far away places. You meet new people. In choir you get to experience things you never would be able to otherwise.

Living in this homely and secluded town called Reedley gives one the illusion that the world is small and simple. In only ten minutes one can get to the market, the local park, or the one “hectic” street that has enough restaurants to fulfill the needs of every town member. Everything is at arm’s reach. With a single walk around the block, a person can spot the favorite teacher she had as a child, the elderly dog that was once filled with robust energy, and three neighbors that she greets daily.

As the school year winds down a some local schools are performing their final shows of the year. Kingsburg High School is among them and will be doing The Wizard of Oz beginning on May 10.

Just like many other High Schools, Reedley High has many amazing clubs and organizations. One specific organization is Reedley NJROTC, or Naval Junior Reserves Officer Training Command, but most students and teachers on campus know it as NJ.

This year, being a Drama kid and Drama club President, I was so excited when they announced the theme was “Old Hollywood”. Soon it went around campus that all the chaperones were going to be dressed up as “Old Hollywood” actors and actresses. I knew that Prom would be a night to remember. My friends and I planned the whole night, getting ready, dinner, and who was going to drive. We were so excited.

My time in Sports Medicine at Reedley High School can only be described as a hands on, applicable class that is as educational as it is fun. The teacher, Mr. Kirby Kauk, does an excellent job of keeping the class entertaining with his endless number of stories and outrageously corny jokes that somehow amazingly help us study for tests.

When you think of Reedley, you may only think of a small agricultural community that lacks the culture of the big cities like Los Angeles or San Francisco, especially those who have lived in the town for most of their lives or have just found themselves placed here. Not many see what seems very obvious to some, that there are “creators of culture”, so to speak, right here in this valley, specifically Reedley.

Joyce Funda a junior at RHS and the smartest person I know. She said in our interview that if she could change her past she would have joined more clubs and sports earlier in high school. I laughed because I think she is involved with enough already! But that is Joyce for you, she never gives up, she is constantly involved and nothing is too big or too hard for her. She is an academic inspiration and I can’t wait to see what she does later in life.

When I look back on my high school career in ten years, I’ll have a lot to remember and appreciate. Although, I already know there is something I do that will provide me with my fondest memories. When I mention to others my age and how I spend most of my weekends, they don’t exactly understand. I’m part of the Reedley River Rats and along with my six band mates, play Dixieland Jazz music for audiences throughout California.
