Welcome to KRL’s Chef’s Kitchen, a series of articles that takes us into the kitchens of local chefs where they share not only a personal recipe but a story behind it. This time we are again in the kitchen of Martin Barcellos, chef and owner with his wife Dawn, of Valentino’s Italian Restaurant in Reedley.

It has been said that a thing, whatever the thing, is more than the sum of its parts; still, looking at those parts does help. Nightwolf is the summation of great talent and a great connection between the members which helps propel the sound and lyrics into the hearts and minds of their audience.

When I was asked to do a review of the Italian restaurant Valentino’s, I was excited because many family members have experienced their food both at its new location in downtown Reedley and when the restaurant resided on Manning across from Savemart.

J’s Sports Bar and Grill in Dinuba is decorated specifically to engage you while watching a game on T.V. After I was seated, I perused the menu looking for something that caught my eye. I finally decided on the turkey sandwich: thinly sliced oven roasted turkey on a French roll with baby leaf lettuce, sliced tomatoes, provolone, roasted red peppers and chipotle mayonnaise.

Interviewing different bands exposes me to local artists that I otherwise would have remained oblivious to and one such band is Saving Temperance. This band out of Kingsburg brings a mix of faith with rock. Although this is not something new, the band’s mix of alternative rock music and lyrics about faith, mercy and so on carry the weight and well of the emotion of the words written.

When it comes to cafés and coffee shops, they are a dime a dozen, especially since Starbucks seems to be everywhere and in almost every town (some may even say that a town is not a town unless it has a Starbucks or a coffee shop). Since cafés are plentiful, it can be difficult to discern which one is good. Some people are satisfied as long as they have a decent cup of coffee in the morning. Now don’t get me wrong, I like an iced coffee once in a while, and often frequent such chains as Starbucks purely out of convenience, but if you’re looking for good coffee and a relaxed atmosphere, Café Fanatico is an awesome fix for caffeinated needs.

On the musical scene today is the post-hardcore band Swimming with Tsunamis, with members from the Dinuba and Tulare areas. New to the local music scene, this band was formed in January of this year.Post-hardcore refers to the area of punk and hardcore, but does not reside in these neighborhoods; post-hardcore is its own sound, as is Swimming with Tsunamis. Their mix of scream and clean vocals doesn’t make for “easy listening” but it is definitely enjoyable.

Recently I paid a visit to a small Mexican restaurant here in Reedley wanting to get some good Mexican food, and having been to Daniels a few years back for lunch, I thought why not try their dinner. I must say, I was not disappointed. This is not to say that this restaurant does not have their down sides. Also, this is not the place for a first date; this restaurant is for laughing loud, having to talk over people, and hanging out with friends, family and your significant other who you have been with for a while. Basically, if you are planning on taking your honey out on a romantic evening, this is not the place.

Being given the opportunity to write reviews for this magazine, I have been able to explore different types of music, books and so on. This time round, I have been given the opportunity to write a review on the band A Current Affair, who I have placed among my favorites. Their sound (alternative rock) makes you want to bob your head along, while offering meaningful lyrics and messages that are punctuated by said sound. A Current Affair, though, has been around for a while, but you may be surprised to hear that this group has only been performing together for about eight months.

It is said by many comedians that comedy is hard. Like anything comedy takes time and is a process of elimination of what is not funny and picking what your audience might respond to. Local comedian Julian Aguilar is no exception; Aguilar constantly tests what is funny, re-writes jokes so that they can have more effect, and scrutinizes his line-up of jokes and skits so he can get the most laughs possible.

Whenever someone from out of state comes to the Valley, they always ask what a packing shed (or house) is, and many even check into touring one. Even some natives of the Central Valley are a little sketchy on what a packing house is. Whenever you are driving down a road there always seems to be a truck hauling some fruit somewhere.
