The Colossus of New York is a 1958 sci-fi movie directed by Eugene Lourie. It’s not a movie a lot of people are familiar with, but if you are a fan of 1950s sci-fi, or even 1950′s movies in general, this is a film I highly recommend.

42 is the story of Jackie Robinson’s first two seasons in the Brooklyn Dodger organization; first with the 1946 Montreal Royals, and then with the 1947 Dodgers, becoming the first African-American to play in the modern major leagues.

It’s the opening weekend for the new movie 42, based on the life of Jackie Robinson, the first black man to play major league baseball in the modern era. I haven’t seen it yet, and when I do, you’ll see a review here at KRL, but I thought you might enjoy my list of the five best baseball movies ever made.

Reedley College Baseball coach Steve Pearse knows what it takes to build a successful college baseball program. He came to Reedley College three years ago from UCLA–one of the most distinguished programs in the nation. He also played baseball at Fresno State, another successful program. Although the Tigers are off to a slow start this season, the signs are already there that Reedley College baseball is on the way back to prominence. Coach Pearse recently took some time to answer a few questions.

Former major league pitcher Dennis Springer will be the guest speaker this Saturday night at the Reedley College Baseball kickoff dinner, at six p.m. at the Reedley Community Center. Dennis pitched for Reedley College in the mid eighties before spending eight years in the big leagues, pitching for six teams, including the Angels and the Dodgers. I had a chance to ask Dennis a few questions leading up to Saturday night’s banquet.

I’m sure that if you’re a sports fan, you’ve noticed that attending a professional sporting event has gotten prohibitively expensive. If you want a decent seat for Giants game or a Lakers game, you’ll need to fill out a loan application. That’s why it’s my pleasure to once again encourage you to enjoy the best pro sports deal anywhere – The Fresno Monsters.

2012 was an interesting year in the world of sports. From a local standpoint and a national standpoint, it was unpredictable and exciting, which, of course, is why we love sports! Here are my top stories from the year, in no particular order, beginning with the local scene.

Mark Gritton Local Sports Profile

Mark Gritton is a man who has been to a lot of places, so it’s interesting to find a man of his caliber at a far away place like Coalinga. Mark is the Athletic Director and former head football coach at West Hills College. He’s someone I’ve known and admired from a distance for a long time. (As the saying goes, Coalinga isn’t at the edge of the world, but you can see it from there!). Reedley College and West Hills College are once again in the same football conference, so we’ll be seeing Mark on a regular basis again. I recently had the opportunity to ask him a few questions about his life and his passion–Junior College athletics.

Golfers call it “The Click”. It’s the moment when all the practice comes together and you suddenly realize your swing is perfect, and you can make the golf ball do anything you want. The Reedley College Tigers may very well have felt the football version of “The Click” Saturday night in Coalinga, when they played perhaps their finest game in the past three years, defeating West Hills College 42-24.

The Reedley College Tigers found a cure for their season long funk on Saturday afternoon. They played the Merced College Blue Devils. The Tigers ripped the Merced defense to shreds and won their 2012 homecoming game by a score of 52-38.

Momentum or confidence – which is more important? If your talking about the Reedley College Tigers Football team, they had a little of both going into last Friday’s game against Diablo Valley in Pleasanton, but neither did them any good, as they lost 49-21.

For as long as Hollywood has been making movies, monster, horror and science fiction have been an important part of the industry’s success. And if you are a monster movie fan like I am, then you will thoroughly enjoy Universal Studios Monsters by Michael Mallory.
