The Brain That Wouldn’t Die is a sci-fi movie released in 1962. It was actually filmed and completed several years earlier, but because it’s so sick, twisted, dark, morbid and absurd, its release was delayed. Well, I should correct myself. It wasn’t delayed because of its absurdity. It became a cult classic because of its absurdity.

For sports fans, 2011 was an amazing, ridiculous and frustrating year. Choosing the top ten sports stories of the year was something like choosing the ten best tasting Christmas cookies my wife (and editor) baked over the holidays – there were a lot to choose from! But here, in no particular order, are my top ten local and national sports stories of 2011.

Immanuel High School has a rich sports tradition, and the school’s basketball program has been especially successful in the past decade. Any coach who steps into the head coaching spot for Immanuel is stepping into high expectations, and C.J. Haydock is the new man on the hot seat.

It’s always a risk to place high expectations on something. It’s especially risky when you place those high expectations on yourself. Joshua Andrews did that, and the results were amazing.

As the football season winds down, there’s not a whole lot left to say about the season for the Reedley College Tigers. Saturday’s 41-7 loss to College of the Sequoias was a repeat of the other eight losses the Tigers have suffered this year: poor defense, spotty offense and a lopsided loss.

Doug Vincent has never been one to let anything get in his way of accomplishing what he sets his mind to. Take an obstacle like contracting Polio at one year old, and walking with crutches for the past 55 years. It didn’t stop him from wanting to be mobile and independent and do the things he wanted to do without any help. That’s why it’s only appropriate that Doug had the idea to start a website dedicated to helping and advising the handicapped community, and the result is Walk and Roll Live.

The Reedley College Tigers finished up their pre-conference schedule Saturday night in Salinas, as they fell to Hatrnell College 27-20 in overtime. Certainly the c=score is an important part of the story, and most people would say it’s the only thing that matters, but that’s not the case with this game.

There’s not a lot to be said about the Reedley College football game this past Saturday night. Well, there’s plenty that could be said, but suffice it to say, it was a bad night for the Tiger defense, as they gave up 76 points in losing to West Hills, 76-44, dropping their season record to 1-3.

Football season is in full swing, so I was trying to think of someone to interview who would have a unique perspective on what is unquestionably America’s favorite sport. Then it occurred to me – why not interview the one without whom we could not even have a game? No, not the referee. We could play the game without him, although trusting the players to call their own penalties is somewhat akin to asking a four year old to guard the cookie jar.

What a difference a week makes! A week ago, the Reedley College Tigers were reeling after being crushed by San Mateo 48-14 for their second straight defeat to open the season. But the Tigers got a lot of things straightened out in the ensuing week, and clobbered the Cabrillo College Seahawks 58-7 Saturday night at Reedley High school Stadium.
