In January of 2010, Artistic Director and driving force, Lissa Engstrom, founded The E & e Performing Arts Center in Kingsburg. One of its intents was to bring theater and instill a love of performing into the community, which was home to her and her husband, Corey.

Ever wonder how the Kingsburg Swedish Festival got its start? As stated in the official Chamber of Commerce pamphlet from this year’s Festival, in 1924, a group of women from the Concordia Lutheran Church presented a mid-summer festival for residents of the Concordia Home, a retirement home located near the present Kingsburg Hospital.

I first met brother and sister, Nicholas and Kara McIntyre, in Reedley, California, where we attended Community Christian Fellowship Church together. As often happens, life intervened and my family and I began attending church near our home in Kingsburg. However, I “bumped” into both of them once again on Facebook as they began doing PR for the band that they had put together, The Autumn Lo.

Saturday, April 16, 2011, the 17th Annual Kingsburg Chamber of Commerce Car Show will descend upon Draper Street and nearly all of downtown Kingsburg. Sponsored by the Selma Auto Mall, the event will bring pre-1972 automobiles to the community.

Whether they fully realize it yet or not remains to be seen, but Kingsburg High School (KHS) students have just experienced a dream come true. On March 4, 2011, myself and fifty-eight others, including forty-six members of the KHS Wind Ensemble, boarded a school bus and traveled to San Francisco International Airport. Our destination was New York City and the world-renowned Carnegie Hall.

Saturday, March 19, 2011, the Kingsburg Gun Club is teaming up with the Kingsburg Cancer Volunteers for a fundraiser which will benefit both the Volunteer organization as well as the Craycroft Cancer Center at Valley Children’s Hospital.

Over the next six days KRL is going to review the 10 Oscar nominated movies–one a day. Yes I know that doesn’t add up to 10, however we have already reviewed four of them and we will be re-posting those here as well! When a family loses a loved one, there is typically some support: friends and family visit or often stay for extended periods of time; a local priest, pastor or other church official might pay a visit; or the church family might bring meals to the home for that terrible first week. If the individual who died was in law enforcement and was killed in the line of duty however, then there is an organization that steps in to help: C.O.P.S.

At first glance, the new motion picture The King’s Speech appears to be the type of film that only long-winded critics would wish to spend hours discussing, and where we might expect to see advertisements of the film adorned with the dreaded header: in select theaters.

In an area of Kingsburg where one might not expect to find anything extraordinary, there is a wine tasting room that is exactly that. At 1665 Simpson, on the west side of the street, some award-winning wines can be found, not from Napa or the Central Coast, but from the California Central Valley. Kingsburg High and 2005 Fresno State graduate, Oscar F. Ramos, is producing premium wines at the winery that he founded: Ramos Torres Winery.

Most residents of Kingsburg know there are a handful of events that are important to the City of Kingsburg, and more specifically to the downtown. If the Swedish Festival is number one, then the Santa Lucia Day celebration might be next.

The young women don their matching long skirts and jackets, put on their bonnets, and thrust their cold hands into hand muffs for warmth. The young men dress in black pants, white tuxedo shirts, black capes and top hats. They wear festive colored shawls and vests respectively, bringing rays of sunshine to the dreary winter.

An amazing and multitalented artist has devoted his life to bringing change to the hearts of the California Central Valley and well beyond. His name is Rick Alonzo, and he has been incorporating his talents of painting, martial arts and gymnastic skills to preach the gospel of Christ as well as hope, love and racial reconciliation to places such as schools, inner cities, juvenile halls and Christian crusades since 1992.
