Clovis Unified School District, north of Fresno, celebrated last year with a rebate of more than $100,000 from PG & E. Eight schools in the district participated in a pilot energy management program: Clovis High School, Kastner Intermediate School, and Cole, Maple Creek, Mountain View, Valley Oak and Weldon Elementary Schools, as well as the Center for Advanced Research and Technology (CART), a career-specific, lab-based school.

Too often our favorite literary sleuths, lawyers and LEOs (law enforcement officers) don’t make the jump to TV and movies with their personalities intact. John Sandford’s Certain Prey is a recent cringe-inducing example in spite of Mark Harmon in the leading role.

In October, the U.S. Department of Energy sponsored its fifth Solar Decathlon. This year’s competition featured 19 colleges from five countries and four continents. The challenge: design, build and operate the most cost effective, energy efficient and attractive solar powered house. Ten contests over ten days pushed the teams to demonstrate each house’s performance, livability and affordability.

This season (and a half) brought three new women cops to the small screen: Unforgettable’s Carrie Wells (CBS) starring Poppy Montgomery (Without a Trace), Prime Suspect’s Jane Timoney (NBC) starring Maria Bello and The Protector’s Gloria Sheppard (Lifetime) starring Ally Walker (The Profiler).

In her new series, Sarah Michelle Geller (SMG) plays twin sisters, Bridget and Siobhan, who reunite after being estranged for six years. Bridget, a former stripper and recovering alcoholic, is running from the mob after witnessing a murder. Siobhan is living the high life of a rich society wife.

The title character is Patrick Jane (Simon Baker), a paid consultant to the California Bureau of Investigation (CBI) with a former life as a celebrity psychic. He uses the talents of his former career to help a team of CBI agents solve various crimes. His motive: to stay close to the investigation of the man who killed his wife and daughter – Red John.

Fall is in the air, at least in my imagination. The advent of Labor Day turns my mind to thoughts of fresh pencils and notebooks, new shoes and the TV Guide fall preview issue. I can almost feel the heft of the glossy pages as I set out to plan my TV life back in the day – a time when there were only three networks, you had to hurry home to watch your favorites, and sometimes faced painful choices when two were on at the same time.

USA Network’s new series Suits asks “can a guy with eidetic memory pass the bar exam without going to law school, and fake his way through a big time law firm with the help of a senior partner?” And to up the stakes, he has to pretend he graduated from Harvard, in a firm full of Harvard Law grads.

On Monday July 11, 2011 the TNT series The Closer began its seventh season. Kyra Sedgwick is Deputy Chief Brenda Leigh Johnson, a Georgia police detective and former CIA interrogator brought to LA to lead what has evolved from the Priority Murder Squad (PMS-really?), later renamed Priority Homicide Division and currently called the Major Crimes Division.
