A loss is a loss, and Reedley College football coach Randy Whited will tell you that as well, but the takeaway truth from Saturday’s 28-24 loss to Hartnell College is that the Tigers are back – back to the level of performance and expectation we haven’t seen in several years.

They’ve teased us with their potential. They’ve frustrated us with several last minute losses. But now I can officially say – the 2014 Reedley College football team is one of the most exciting and talented squads I’ve seen in the past twenty years.

Most football coaches will tell you they don’t believe in moral victories. Reedley College football Coach Randy Whited may or may not be in that particular group, but he has to be somewhat pleased with the way his team fought and fought before finally surrendering to Fresno City College 49-44 Saturday night in Fresno.

I’m not one to complain (don’t ask the editor about that, please), but Reedley College’s football team is getting a bit predictable. For the third straight week, the Tigers fell behind, and then rallied to take a late lead. The difference this last Saturday night was the Tigers snuffed out a late rally by Gavilan and won the game 44-33, to even their season record at 2-2.

One of the fun things about attending a sporting event is not knowing the outcome ahead of time. But Saturday night at Reedley High School Stadium, the fans not only didn’t know the outcome beforehand, they didn’t know the final score on their way out, either, after an inexcusable blunder by the game officials left a black cloud hanging over the entire event.

The Reedley College football team is in serious trouble. I can’t think of any other way to say it. The Tigers (1-5) begin conference play this coming Saturday, and if last Saturday’s 28-0 loss to Diablo Valley College is any indication, it could be ugly.

To have a successful Athletic Department, any school–be it a high school, a junior college or a four year college–has to have a dedicated and hard working Athletic Director. Reedley College is blessed to have one of those people heading their athletic department–Javier Renteria. Javier’s “life journey,” and how he ended up as A.D. at Reedley College is really fascinating. He shared that story with me recently.
