Another engaging story with a favorite character in Kathi Daley’s literary family! Kailani “Lani” Pope, lifeguard at the Dolphin Bay resort, has found another dead body, this one at the bottom of a cliff. However, and here is Kathi’s twist, the discovery has Lani perplexed since this body was reported to have died five years ago! Sure, no body had been found then, and Lani’s father was first on the scene, finding the murdered body of an heiress, chasing the possible killer to a cliff and witnessing that man jump. All believed no one could have survived that leap.

As this clever mystery unfolds the jumper, Clifford Cramer, is rumored to have been intimately connected to the victim, Roxanne Bronwyn. Further into the investigation, it is discovered Clifford’s own wife, Anastasia, was missing and her blood found on the lanai. WOW! Weed through those details! Lani’s father questioned whether it was all connected, but he was forced to drop the ‘going nowhere’ investigation, and five years later? No Clifford, no Anastasia, no killer…case stamped cold! book

Kathi Daley makes sure the cold case heats up, taking us on a twisty turn of events. An arm found floating near the beach, forensics making a shocking identification, and Lani’s cop brother becomes a target. One of the most enjoyable characteristics is that Lani will not be sidelined. Somewhat covertly, she partners with her retired cop dad which more closely explores an endearing dynamic between her, the only girl in the family, and her dad. His knowledge of the original cold case and enlisting the help from his retired cop friends helps them sort through the details, revisit witnesses and hopefully bring a killer to long awaited justice…all this and Kathi Daley’s signature “I didn’t see that coming” ending!

Again, I couldn’t put this book down. The cold case overlapping into current events was well written and fast paced with an exciting Kathi Daley signature “Oh, no!” trouble for Lani. The characters are rich, some quirky, some moved from peripheral status to the forefront, but still so entertaining to follow in this seventh book.

Along with the excitement of the murder investigation, Kathi weaves in many other ongoing story lines just as intriguing. We follow the ups and downs of Lani’s relationship with her boyfriend Luke, who is in Texas helping his family while his dad is recuperating from an injury, thereby exploring another interesting family dynamic. Will this relationship be put on hold indefinitely? And Lani, whose dream is to be a police officer and follow in the family’s footsteps, may be getting her chance at the academy…or will family derail her desires?

And Halloween? Kathi does the holiday themes very well having everyone prepping for a nice gathering and the celebration itself, even with interruptions. Another signature fun is the fan-submitted recipes for delicious treats: Scones with a Flavor Twist, Nan’s Banana Bread, No-Name Cake, and Tropical Treat Bread.

With Kathi Daley you get a clever, exciting mystery, endearing and interesting characters, and delicious, easy-to-follow recipes…what else do you need?

Murder at Midnight earns 5/5 Cold Case Files…Hawaiian-style!
