It’s October and the time of year when we think of Halloween and black cats so as is tradition with my articles, two very special black cats are being honored this month.

Miguel was saved from the CCSPCA (Fresno) by Feral Paws Rescue on July 21, 2016, when he was six-months-old. He had been a very special kitten at the shelter as he had been saved from euthanasia by the Shelter Director and spent a month in the Director’s office where he was given a lot of love by the staff. When Miguel arrived at my house, he immediately made himself at home and made friends with the other cats, most of whom are also black. He also became best friends with his new “mentor,” Donald, a large orange male who had also been saved from the shelter by Feral Paws Rescue a few months earlier but had just come to my house the previous night.

Miguel continued to grow and thrive and since Donald loved to sleep on the bed at night, so did he. He grew into a big house panther and still loves lots of attention and now sleeps on the pillow next to my head.

Pompeo arrived at the CCSPCA (Fresno) in early January 2018. At the time he was two-years-old, and since he was so friendly, he was put in the Adoptable area of the shelter, and due to his size he was given his own condo by the front door instead of one of the smaller kennels. When I was over at the shelter at the end of January along with Paula of Feral Paws Rescue saving several cats, I saw this big black cat in the condo and stopped to chat with him for a few minutes. To our surprise when Feral Paws Rescue was called in mid-June to save more cats from the shelter, he was one of them! I brought Pompeo to my house to be with the other black cats and so he could roam freely around my house.

Pompeo

Pompeo gets along well with the other kitties and loves to be petted. He prefers to sleep in the cat trees and cat beds instead of with me at night, but that’s also a good thing in that he has no problems with other cats and has settled in well here.

So many cats are at the shelter and need to find loving homes, and thankfully for them Feral Paws Rescue always steps up and saves them when called. Some need extra care and socializing with humans and some don’t want to be around other cats and have to be separated at the Rescue. But fortunately there are those like Miguel and Pompeo who get along with everyone and just want to be loved and have a safe place to live. For everyone reading this article, please consider adopting a cat from Feral Paws Rescue so that they may continue to save as many innocent lives as possible! You can learn more about adopting from Feral Paws on their website.

Happy Halloween from two grateful rescues, Miguel and Pompeo! And please, keep your cats safely indoors on Halloween!

  1. Great story! I also foster and have a whole house full of foster failures – most of them black since folks often overlook black cats and dogs at the shelter!
