Although professional party planner Liv McKay is fully booked for the Halloween season, she feels that she owes much of her success to the support of the Professional Women’s Association of Dixie. Saddled with their unfortunately pronounced acronym, PWAD’s president may have business knowledge, but she is mostly focused on promoting her own personal interests. The vice-president of Dixie Savings and Loan only because her father owns the bank, Morgan Robinson is renowned for getting on everyone’s last nerve and for all males in the vicinity. So it’s surprising that for their professional women’s retreat Morgan has managed to enlist Lucinda Grable, a former Dixie resident and classmate, who gained fame as a celebrity psychic on a paranormal television reality show.

bookTelevised cemetery ghosts take a backseat to the very real discovery of Morgan’s body on the retreat grounds. Morgan never hesitated to poach on another woman’s marital territory, and evidence has police quickly arresting local hippy and organic herbalist Jasmine Green. Two women whose husbands were rumored to have partaken in Morgan’s wares refuse to believe in Jasmine’s guilt, and choosing instead to stalk Lucinda and prove her a murderer.

Since Liv and her mail carrier best friend Diane Souther so recently encountered no small amount of trouble investigating a previous murder, Liv is initially more than happy to focus on her Liv 4 Fun party events. Liv is fully capable of arranging an ingenious riverboat casino-themed engagement party, but a Halloween fund-raiser will have her juggling bonfires, haunted hayrides, and even a Clue murder mystery dinner. She does not have time for bailing out her friends, cornering a psychic, or stealthily manipulating a date for a deputy.

This second in the Liv and Di in Dixie Mystery series is just as fun as the first, highlighting Liv’s party-planning endeavors while also developing an intricate and unpredictable mystery. Liv’s professional skills as an event planner are surprisingly useful as an amateur investigator, as she has mastered the art of organization and mediating between clients. As much as her husband’s inability to complete home renovation repairs exasperates Liv, they still share strong affection and a sizzling attraction. One of the most enjoyable aspects is that throughout the novel, family life and drama plays out in the background. Liv’s father-in-law is crankily not accepting retirement, her sister-in-law is about to pop with her second child, and an irritating neighbor continues to be a nuisance. The unique Southern flavor enhances the entire series, making this a fun and delightfully humorous read.
