The Words is the kind of movie you can’t say a lot about in a review without giving too much away, but here goes. Rory Jansen (Bradley Cooper) is a struggling young writer in New York who begins to wonder if he can ever really make it. He has a great girlfriend named Dora played by Zoe Saldana (Uhura in the latest Star Trek movie) and overall they have a really nice life. If only he could make it as a writer.
Rory takes on a “normal” job at a literary agency after his father’s pushing and he and Dora get married and honeymoon in Paris, where they find this wonderful old satchel in a thrift store. Rory later finds out the satchel has an incredible manuscript inside. Without really intending to Rory takes credit for the story and his career finally takes off. The rest of the movie shows the price he pays for taking credit for someone else’s work.
The Words is really three stories in one as we not only see Rory’s story, but that of the person (played by Jeremy Irons) whose story he stole, and another writer played by Dennis Quaid whom we are never clearly told what his place is in all this, but we can guess. I’m still not sure what I think of the ending, it left a lot of questions, but overall I really enjoyed this movie. I love Bradley Cooper and really liked the relationship between Rory and Dora. This is definitely a thinker’s kind of movie so if you’re looking for some chick flick fluff or an action movie, this is not for you. But if like me, you enjoy a movie that makes you think and wonder, don’t miss The Words. My husband enjoyed it, and my teenaged son loved it, so it works across the ages and genders.
