Martha Rose received a mysterious package in the mail. It asked her to return her DNA to find out if she had any other relatives. Luckily, it was sent by her daughter so that mystery was solved. However, the results brought about more questions than answers.

So, what would you do, if as an older adult, you found out you have a half-sister? And she doesn’t live all that far away. Martha thought her dad was long dead but found out that was wrong, too. The more Martha and Giselle, her new and mouthy sister, dig, the more questions and puzzles they find. mystery book cover

Giselle is rich, the corporate jet, designer clothes, several homes kind of rich. Martha lives in the Valley which is so low-class according to Giselle, although not as bad as it could have been. Giselle is widowed. Martha, divorced but engaged to Crusher, a motorcycle riding Jewish man who is also an agent with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives who just moved in with Martha.

Solving a cold case is always difficult but one that’s over thirty-years-old is a real challenge. Investigators have retired, died, or forgotten details, witnesses are scarce, and relatives never seem to tell the truth. Still, Martha and Giselle are determined to find out what happened to their dad.

On the home front, Martha has to deal with her daughter’s boyfriend. He’s a cop, one that Martha had a few run-ins with. She thinks he’s rude and arrogant but can’t say so. Uncle Isaac is a delight even though he kept secrets he shouldn’t have. Surprisingly, secrets were kept from him as well. Add in the quilting circle/friends, Lucy, Birdie, and Jazz for more color and excitement in Martha’s life. Jazz always brings his Maltese who loves to play with Martha’s cat. With all that’s going on, Martha can use the distraction.

This is the sixth book in the series. Solving a cold case, involving relatives is less dangerous than some of the predicaments Martha’s been in. Reining in her newly-found sister is going to be a constant challenge. However, Martha is able to provide a distraction that just might work.

With Martha and friends in their fifties, her daughter just over thirty, and Uncle Isaac older, there’s a nice mix of ages and attitudes. Martha is an avid quilter, suffers with fibromyalgia, and insists on wearing comfortable clothes. Giselle is all about appearances, classic style, and comfort as provided by others. Crusher is the perfect match for Martha because he listens without passing judgement and is always willing to help. Plus, he’s a hunk. You can’t go wrong with that.
