Two Shy Westies Need a Loving Home

Ziggy and Elly are two-year-old Westies, sisters from the same litter. They are a bonded pair that came to Sunshine State Westie Rescue (SSWR) in Florida as owner turn-ins. Due to family issues, the owner felt she didn’t have enough time to spend with these girls. Because they are a bonded pair, SSWR wants to place them together. They need a single person, couple, or family that has patience and is willing to finish the Westies’ training and socialization as both are quite shy.

Neither dog has any health issues. They have been spayed, and both are up to date on their shots and vaccinations. Elly is doing well at the foster home and is coming out of her shell. However, she will need more help in continuing to build her confidence. Ziggy is still nervous and flinches at loud noises or sudden movements. She sometimes hides under a bed when she is scared. SSWR is confident that with the right help, Ziggy will gain confidence, but she needs to do so on her own terms and at her own pace. The rescue volunteers are encouraged by her progress so far as she has learned to cuddle and give kisses with her foster mom. “But with Ziggy, you really have to wait and let her come to you,” said Aggie of SSWR.

The girls enjoy walks but will jump and shy away from loud vehicles like trucks and motorcycles. They need a fenced in yard to play in and explore, and since their training is not yet complete, they need to go out often. Ellie and Ziggy are not aggressive and want to learn, but their uncertainty and fear make the training process slower than it would normally be. They would benefit from an owner with Westie or Terrier experience, and one who has time and patience to work with them. SSWR feels that young children would be overwhelming for these two Westies, and it isn’t known how they would be with cats.

  2. it is so sad when puppies are not provided the necessary socialization/coping skills while still with their mom and litter mates. The insecurity/fear exhibited by these to little girls is NOT the fault of the owner — it’s the fault of the person who produced these pups … much of this was already in place when she obtained them.

A good breeders provides this starting the day they are born – with human touch! then at about 3 weeks the 100 things in 100 days begins — new surfaces underfoot, new sounds, introducing new food, then it moves forward from there – the preliminary house training – from one end of the litter box to the other as Mom isn’t doing that job anymore!

Introducing new people, new dogs/cats/birds in the home; first time ‘out’ — remove the pups 2 at a time ( safety in numbers! ) out of the whelping box, and take to another room, or weather/conditions permitting outdoors — and the process continues until about 8-12 weeks when they transition to a new owner – who should keep up the 100 things for the next 100 day!
If pups are NOT provided the right social stimulus at the early formative weeks — the months and years to come will be difficult for everyone involved.

  5. My husband and I have a rescued Westie, Maxwell Henry. He is eleven and the light of our lives. We have had him since he was one year old. Everyone says that he is the luckiest little boy since he receives so much love, excellent care, regular Vet check-ups, monthly grooming, etc. We are the lucky ones! We would adore another Westie but it would need to be a male. If you come in contact with a young male Westie that needs recuing, please let me know.

  7. Adorable! Not sure my two 10 year old pups would be able to get along with them without being jealous. One’s a westie and the other is a malti-poo. Also, don’t think my hubby would let me have two more dogs. 🙁
Hope they find a home soon.

  10. Hello, I have a large quiet home with a fenced in yard and a screened in porch. I live in Tennessee and stay home, I would be able to give these girls a lot of undivided attention. I love westies and am the proud owner of a 8 year old male named Remy, Remy is very social without a mean bone in his body. What part of Florida are the girls residing? I would appreciate any information on them. Thank You, Lynn
