In this sequel to Smurfs, Gargamel has become famous in Paris as a magician with the help of the Smurf essence he obtained from Papa Smurf in the previous movie. His ultimate goal however is to obtain all of the Smurfs essence.

Gargamel creates two creatures in the likeness of Smurfs he calls the Naughties to help capture Smurfette who can give them the formula to make the naughties into Smurfs so he will have a way to achieve unlimited supply of Smurf essence. Then he plans to use it to take over the world. The Naughties, Hackus and Vexy capture Smurfette just before her surprise party and they attempt to befriend her so they can talk her into giving them the formula. Papa Smurf and a group of Smurfs come back to the human world to find their friends Patrick and Grace to help them save Smurfette. They make new friends along the way and have many new adventures in this second movie.

Smurfs 2 ties in with the storylines from the original cartoon and expands on them. I liked how they used the idea of how Smurfette was created by Gargamel and had him make new Smurfs for this movie that were meant to be naughty. The naughties and Smurfette found they had things in common that she never had with the other Smurfs. They used this relationship to show the value of true friendship and what it means to be a part of a family.

If you watched the cartoon from the 80s you will enjoy seeing the Smurfs return to the screen in these family movies. I enjoyed sharing with my daughter one of my favorite childhood cartoons. She has loved the Smurfs ever since the first movie came out. She had to bring her toy Smurf to watch the second movie with her. Smurfs 2 is full of humor, life lessons in friendship and family, and adventure, which makes it a great movie for the whole family.

Smurfs 2 is currently playing at Dinuba Platinum Theatres 6, also in 3D. Showtimes can be found on their website. Platinum Theaters Dinuba 6 now proudly presents digital quality films in 2-D and 3-D with 5.1 Dolby digital surround sound to maximize your movie experience.
