Tj is on the Case!
In 2013, Kathi Daley first introduced fans to Tj Jensen and residents of Serenity, Nevada, however in 2016, Henrey Press reissued the series with redesigned covers and the promise for new adventures. The newly released book, Beaches in Paradise, is the ninth adventure and easily enjoyed without starting at the beginning, although newbies would benefit greatly from reading the other books to better understand character development and ongoing relationships. Briefly Tj Jensen is a high school teacher, but, of course, circumstances have also put her into the role of amateur sleuth. She enlists family and friends, professional and amateur, to uncover the truth behind suspicious deaths, but recently her connection at the police department is out of town and the new deputy has been keeping Tj at arm’s length. However, it doesn’t slow her down.

There are references to, no spoilers, to two of the previous books with discussions about relationships and bodies found in the seventh book, Treasures in Paradise, and characters and connections with the murder mystery in the eighth book in the series, Fireworks in Paradise. I’ve read the series, so I was thrilled with the overlap, but newbies don’t shy away. You can start here and be totally entertained.

Beaches in Paradise: earns 5/5 Suspicious Secret Files…Clever!

Tj and boyfriend Kyle Donovan are enjoying a bonfire kicking off the Summer Festival at Paradise Lake. Their relationship has become more serious over the past few weeks, and the idea of moving to a more intimate level has occupied their thoughts. However, seeing Deputy Kate Baldwin, the newest member of the Serenity Sheriff’s Department, approaching them causes concern. “Do you know Gina Roberts?” led to questions of her whereabouts and connection to Striker Bristow, a developer who had earlier been a suspect in the death of a local judge and Tj’s father’s injuries. But, now he’s dead, bullet in his back, found in Gina’s car smashed up against a tree, and Gina? Nowhere to be found. But it’s the curious highly encrypted files, mysterious relative, and being followed that makes this investigation very perilous.mystery book cover

Kathi Daley has another “Hit in Paradise!” In my experience, cozy authors all have their own style to show the investigative methods used by the lead character to solve a suspicious death, but I’ve noticed some have the characters just go off seeking answers often ignoring official channels. I cringe sometimes when I feel it isn’t what real people would do, even if it is a fictional world. However, Kathi Daley’s style has a more realistic approach. She has her characters, like Tj, using critical thinking strategies, mapping or recording clues, informally approaching witnesses and suspects, and working cooperatively with rather than circumventing law enforcement. Ok, there are some questionable searches, hacking, and evidence that finds its way into Tj’s pocket, but I would have done it, too. Kathi’s settings are often small towns or small resort communities where residents are very familiar with each other. Therefore being family of or friends with local police, and in return, police recognizing a private citizen is helpful to their mission provides an engaging realism that I enjoy. Did I mention she always incorporates “fur” friends?
