Encino: a Lover, Not a Fighter

Encino came to Col. Potter Cairn Terrier Rescue from a hoarding situation where he was in a yard with a total of ninety dogs. Terrified of being crated, he was not easy to rescue. However, surprisingly given the hoarding conditions, he is not aggressive; no growling or barking.

Vickie, his foster mom, says when she first took him in, he wouldn’t make eye contact, and she couldn’t approach him. She set up an X-pen where Encino felt safe and could see what was going on. He had his food and water dishes and a bed all his own. In his own safe space, he could get used to the doings of the household and the resident Cairns.

Under the experienced care of Vickie and her husband, plus lots of love, Encino has learned to trust, and he has learned to play with Vickie’s two cairns, also rescues from Col. Potter. Vickie has discovered that Encino loves to ride and especially enjoys trips in the family RV. He claims his spot on the back seat between her two cairns and is eager to get rolling.animal rescue

Encino now gets on the couch and loves to sleep with Vickie and her husband in their bed, though he likes to come in after lights out. He has learned to be picked up without panicking, and he loves to be with his people, just not in a lap. He enjoys back rubs and lots of attention.

Encino came to Vickie at the end of March and has made great progress thanks to the skill and experience of Vickie and her husband who, to date, have fostered fourteen dogs, some with special needs. However, he is still fearful of being crated. He weighs about twenty pounds and is only a year old. Although he is not a purebred Cairn, he acts like a Cairn. His DNA shows he is about twenty-five percent Scottie with some Yorkie and other smaller breeds mixed in. He loves to run and enjoys playing chase with Vickie’s two Cairns. Surprisingly, he is also good walking on a leash and loves getting out and about.animal rescue

A good home for Encino would be one with at least one other dog he could play with. He doesn’t need a fenced-in yard as long as he is walked regularly. Because he loves being with his people, a home with an active retired couple or someone who is home at least part of the day would make him happy. It is unknown how he would be with cats or young children.

This is a young, healthy boy with a lot of love to give. He will make a great family member in the right forever home, and Vickie and her husband, who live in the West, are willing to deliver him to that lucky home if it is within five hundred miles.

Encino is included in Col. Potter’s Mix-Up Group of part or non-Cairns so he is available at a reduced adoption fee.
