Rachel is a mystery writer. At a book signing, she met Duffy Madison which was weird because that’s the name of her main character. The man has a similar job and pretty much all the traits and characteristics she gave the fictional Duffy. What’s worse, this guy has no memory of anything in his life that happened more than five years ago—right when Rachel started the series. He thinks his life began then. Rachel thinks this nut case is really Damien Mosley.

Rachel pretty much thinks Duffy, the man, is crazy. She and her assistant Paula, set out to prove it while Duffy helps so he can show he’s right. It’s all very confusing for Rachel. In the meantime, she’s having trouble writing Duffy the character because what if Duffy the man is right and Rachel writes about Duffy the character getting hurt? Will Duffy the man suffer as well? book

You can see the problem here. There are mentions of a Duffy Madison in a high school year book but no photos. Classmates don’t really remember him. However, there’s this one guy who might be of help if only they can locate him. No one knows for sure where he moved.

There was a man who was found dead from a fall, but he’s never been identified. Is he Damien like Duffy says? How could it be proven? No ID on the victim, no idea of who Damien’s dentist was, what is there to go on?

Duffy, nothing if not thorough, goes to the police station to find out more and to suggest an exhumation. Things go downhill from there as he’s arrested, released, arrested, and oh my, guilty or not guilty of the murder of a man he never met.

This is the second book in the Mysterious Detective series. Written Off was the first. While they could be read out of order, readers won’t want to miss a page of the Rachel-Duffy interaction. Both books end with a teaser about the next leaving readers hungry for more. It’s a clever premise and a tricky one to pull off, but Copperman does it smoothly and seemingly without effort. Along the way, Rachel toys with the idea of a love interest. It would be good for her. She needs more in her life than two Duffys. As do we all—write faster, Copperman!
