She’s a shape-shifting daughter of the god Coyote.

She’s married to the Alpha of a werewolf pack.

She has claimed the Tri-Cities of Washington under her protection.

She is rounding up a herd of zombie miniature goats.

It has to be Mercy Thompson in Patricia Briggs’ Storm Cursed, the eleventh outing of this urban fantasy series. She deals with the aforementioned goat-zombies, witches, zombies, goblins, trolls, zombies, vampires, the fae, the staff-members of a U.S. Senator, and…..lots more zombies.patricia briggs

The Fae and the U.S. government are trying to develop peace terms, and the Pack is security/go-between/explainer for the Feds, since they have a better understanding of each side. The goblin-king helps Mercy stop a police-killing troll, who makes cryptic statements. Next, she corrals said undead goats, but can’t get help from the local coven. Who are “tied up,” says an unfamiliar voice.

Black magic is the theme, and it isn’t nice. This book is one of the hardest-hitting urban fantasy books I’ve ever read. There is animal abuse, which is a trigger for many people. There is human abuse, violence and descriptions that are unsettling. There is even paranormal abuse, things done to vampires and weres that shouldn’t be done. Just keep telling yourself, “It’s only a story. It’s only a story.”

Mercy and Adam have a loving, tender, sensual, and quirky relationship, and Mercy’s interplay with the various paranormals she knows has the jokey, familiar banter of good friends, with the edge of knowing that some of these good friends drink blood, turn into frightening monsters, and can rip a person to shreds while flossing their teeth.

Storm Cursed reveals several backstories of characters that have had mysterious pasts. Briggs shows a mature confidence in her writing, knowing what to reveal, and how and when to shine the light on the true nature of beings that readers thought they knew. This is a series to be explored as a whole to catch the unfolding of secrets and the development of relationships. The sidebar series needs to be read, too, because you need the rest of the story of characters that travel from one storyline to another.

However you approach Patricia Briggs’ work (jump in at any point and try to swim, or start at the beginning and go with the flow), you’ll know you are in the world of a master of urban fantasy. Enjoy the journey.

  18. I have been hooked on the Mercy Thompson series from the first time I read it. I loved it when she started the Alpha and Omega set, which I consider to be part of the same series. I just wish I could afford to keep up with the newer books. I look forward to when I can catch up on reading them all. I always start reading the new book in a series with Book 1, the beginning of the stories, and keep reading until I finish the new one.
    Sincerely,
    Donna M Erwin
