The second and darker of the Snow White films was released this weekend headlined by Charlize Theron as the evil Queen, and Chris Hemsworth as the titular character the Huntsman, with Kristen Stewart as the all-important Snow White. Notice how I didn’t say that Kristen Stewart headlined this movie because all the marketing was firmly to put emphasis on Charlize Theron (an established headliner) and Chris Hemsworth, Thor himself, to the forefront to draw people in.

I went into this movie expecting over the top evil bitch queen acting from Charlize Theron and that is exactly what I got.

Aside from her acting, Chris Hemsworth’s surprise performance, and the amazing visuals, there is nothing else to get from this movie. It is fun and not as bad as I thought it would be. Although Kristen Stewart’s bland one face acting (it was better than I expected) didn’t detract from my enjoyment but it didn’t help either.

The plot is fairly straight forward, evil queen must kill Snow White to live forever and rule. There are some plot holes, like how K-Stew’s (see what I did there) Snow White is somehow able to run and kickass when she was locked up in a tower her whole life. Or how the romance with Chris Hemsworth was completely one-sided, she had no chemistry with him, although I did feel it from him. And how in any world Charlize Theron would be threatened by K-Stew in the looks department.

Ok, so what did I like? I loved the visuals. The way this movie looks and feels is actually pretty amazing. I also loved that mainly the women were the headliners and the men were more in a supportive role, at one point Charlize Theron just wails on a guy screaming I AM YOUR QUEEN, and it was incredibly satisfying.

There are two things though that if you think about the subtext of the film might bug you like it did me. One was that although the movie started out with some good feministic provoking questions and lines, it turned into the sweet virgin Snow White is better than the evil sexed up Queen who uses her beauty as her power. This somehow says that if you use your looks it makes you evil and you are better off being the virgin stoic, weird woman who gets to be queen. I don’t know why, but that just bugged me awhile after the film. I think you will get a better sense of what I mean once you see it and hear some of the throw away lines the two main female characters say.

The second thing is the weird religious overtones that really came out of nowhere and really didn’t serve any purpose that I saw. It was mentioned then discarded, then brought back again. Then there were fairy blessings and then I was really confused.

Anyways, I was expecting to only get good bitch kickass Charlize Theron and the rest of the movie to suck, but it was actually ok. If you want to watch it, go ahead. I don’t think it will be your new favorite movie, but it is something to watch if you have seen everything out or nothing else appeals to you.

  1. I went to watch the film last night. It was not too bad for me either.

To me personally, as I am far from the Europe and US, this is my first snow white film. I missed the animated one but that’s Ok.

I like the visual effect, location and production design but I was expected more good scenes of the beautiful evil.

I don’t know if anyone feel the same way?
