This week we have a review of a fun new book by Kathi Daley perfect for Mother’s Day, and reviewer Kathleen shares some Mother’s Day crafts from the evermineOccasions blog. Details at the end of this post on how to enter to win either a print or kindle copy of The Mother’s Day Mishap, and a link to purchase it from Amazon.

The Mother’s Day Mishap: A Tess and Tilly Mystery By Kathi Daley

“Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds.” Tess Thomas, along with her Golden Retriever Tilly, delivers letters, packages, and gossip to a delightful group of residents in White Eagle, Montana, but along with volunteering at the local animal shelter with the local friendly veterinarian, parenting two kittens, and spending time with good friends and family, she has fallen into incidents of murder…not on purpose, it just gets delivered to her doorstep.

The Mother’s Day Mishap earns 4/5 Mysterious Messages!
mothers day mishap book coverKathi Daley’s work is always packed full of several engaging character-driven storylines, but it is her easy-to-read style and entertaining dialogue that makes it right for a page-turner weekend. There are two engaging storylines that have been weaving through the three books, but unfortunately the storyline involving her father’s death, or maybe-not-death, is here just as a footnote…I hope it will take center stage soon because it has seriously sparked my interest. Tess has also been concerned about her mother’s Italian pen-pal friendship enlisting the skills and contacts of her good friend/tech wiz to get a full background check. Originally there seemed nothing for Tess to use to abate her mother’s eagerness, but digging further has brought up some worrisome, if not murderous, “red flags.” However, the resolution seemed to fall off with details popping in from overseas. I think that this storyline just isn’t finished yet.

The main “Mishap” really pulled at the heart strings. A Mother’s Day card was inadvertently opened revealing the desire for “The Prodigal Child” to reconcile with his mother, long time resident Edna Fairchild. Sadly she passed away six months ago, and without a name or return address, Tess feels compelled to personally search for the offspring’s identity and deliver the news in person rather than sending it off to the dead letter office. It is an engaging story filled with family dysfunction, teenage bullying, and families falling out of touch, but (no spoilers) there was mention to a question in the young man’s father’s legal issue that never seemed to be resolved. I was up for a deep, dark secret mystery, so I may have thought it more important than it really was.

The best part of Kathi Daley’s work, which leads me to recommend the series, is how she gives us a deep look into her characters and their connections to each other and their fur-friends. Tess has golden retriever Tilly and two cats, Tang and Tinder, on whom she dotes with walks and swimming adventures. She also assists the handsome vet with his upcoming adoption event along with a training regiment to help make two inseparable terriers more adoptable. Relationships, friends or lovers, continue to progress raising an interesting issue: can long-time friends be more? I do suggest that newbies start with the first two books (The Christmas Letter; The Valentine Mystery) due to character development and the introduction to the two ongoing storylines.
