When Delaney Nichols answered an ad asking for someone who wanted to work in a bookshop and have adventures, she had no idea what she was getting herself into. Every day is a surprise. Edwin, owner of the Cracked Spine, has a lot of secrets. Most he’s willing to share with Delaney, but not all and that can cause quite a problem.
Edwin asks Delaney to meet a man at a castle to receive a book, a graphic novel really. She’ll know the man by his dress—he’ll be in a William Wallace reenactor’s costume. She has no trouble finding him, but sad to say, it’s his body and no book. Things only get more complicated from there when she finds the book stuck behind stones. Was it hidden or dropped and blown there? Without thinking, she hides it and doesn’t report it to the police on the scene.
Delaney is fortunate in that she’s made so many friends since her arrival in Edinburgh. The bus drivers know her, her landlord is a taxi driver, and her boyfriend owns a pub. The bookshop is a great place to work with Rosie at the desk with the help of her dog, Hector. Hamlet is also a reenactor while working part time at the shop.
When an old friend of Edwin’s shows up, it’s a shock since it was believed he’d died in a fire years ago. His “widow” also drops in to speak to Edwin. And then there’s a woman Edwin and his friends had all been in love with. It’s a lot for Delaney to sort out especially since most of them lie, misremember, or in Edwin’s case, just won’t tell anything.
Do the answers to the mysterious death lie with the book, the past or something more sinister? Delaney is determined to find out before the secrets implode.
This is the second book in the Scottish Bookshop Mystery series. Delaney is someone you’d like for a friend, especially if you were in trouble. She doesn’t take unnecessary risks and makes sure her friends know where she is and keeps them updated on what’s going on. The description of the castle and the countryside will make readers want to pack a bag and go see the Cracked Spine for themselves—and it would be well worth the trip.
Paige Shelton also writes the Gram’s Country Cooking School series (5 books), the Farmer’s Market mysteries (7 books) and the Dangerous Type books (2 books). All are equally good reads. The To Be Read stack just got much taller.
