Mattie Lu Cobb has been working as a K-9 officer for less than a month, but her seven years of experience with the Timber Creek County Sheriff’s office means that she’s not a novice. When a meeting with a high school principal to discuss K-9 inspections is cancelled due to a callout, it’s actually a relief for Mattie who, during her childhood, ran wild through school. Although Mattie never doubts her K-9 partner, Robo’s, skills, she couldn’t predict that his first assignment would result in the discovery of a teenager’s murdered body.

A loyal Bernese Mountain Dog still guarding his late companion leads Mattie to veterinarian Cole Walker, whose impending divorce has him struggling to raise two daughters. Mattie will need his help, along with the dubious support of a brash female detective, as she contends with a jealous supervising officer, an intimidating principal, and secretive teens. Robo proves to be the partner who surpasses all of Mattie’s previous human ones, and their trust in one another increases as they come close to the truth.book

Mattie is our entry into the fascinating world of police dogs and their relationships with their handlers. More often than not, the dogs would perform perfectly were it not for human error. Since Mattie prefers to be in control, placing her complete trust in Robo has been the most difficult thing for her to learn. Raised by abusive parents who left Mattie and her brother in foster care, Mattie is accustomed to asserting herself or risk being ignored. Younger readers will find much to admire in this confident officer, while all readers will enjoy the compelling police procedural and K-9 program details. Solving the most personal mystery in her life will be the next step for Mattie, and the promise of this will lure readers into following the next installment in both her and Robo’s careers.
