Steve Levitan and his golden retriever, Rochester, are attending the blessing of the animals at their synagogue when a disruption occurs with the unexpected arrival of Rabbi Goldberg’s brother, Joel. After sending Joel to his study the rabbi apologizes to the Temple Elders for his brother’s behavior and explains that Joel suffers from schizophrenia. Joel’s urgent visit concerns something he has discovered about the Holocaust and Nazis who escaped detection and made it to America. book

Going over the encounter between the three Temple Elders and Joel, Steve has the uneasy sensation that something isn’t right. When Joel’s murdered body is found on the synagogue’s grounds, Steve and Rochester agree to help find out where the rest of Joel’s personal effects are and what was he doing in town worrying about the Holocaust and Germans who were living among us. Working with his police detective friend, Steve and Rochester travel to the congregation’s old synagogue and discover clues in the ruins that lead them back to the three elders at their new synagogue. Tension mounts as Steve begins to unravel the truth behind Joel’s discovery that caused his death.

This is the eighth book in the series, but with the background the author supplies you can enjoy it without missing out on any history from the earlier books. I really like how these characters were written and presented. Their feelings and thoughts came thru with depth and perception, bringing them to life. Rochester is the perfect dog, smart, loving, and with a nose that finds both bodies and clues. The author has woven new crimes with old ones that make this twisted plot a page turner. Very much a cozy mystery that mystery fans, animal lovers, and general readers will enjoy. I am looking forward to going back and reading the first seven books.
