As a professional party-planner and the sole owner of Liv 4 Fun, Liv McKay’s life revolves around meticulously maintained schedules and lists. What the Dixie, Tennessee native definitely did not have on her agenda was discovering the bodies of Duane and Darrell Farrell, one stuffed in a client’s freezer and his brother stashed with the garbage. In this tiny Southern town where gossip spreads information faster than a police scanner, Liv worries that the murders will have an impact on her growing business. What proves to be far more mortifying is the discovery of evidence linking Liv’s father-in-law Daddy Wayne to drug trafficking within his trucking business.

When a health condition forces Daddy Wayne into the hospital, Liv is unable to sit on the sidelines while the FBI and the town’s judgmental opinion descends on him. With the help of her best friend Diane—and Di’s medicinal daiquiris—Liv attempts to question the Farrell brothers’ neighbors, civil war reenactors, and even suffers a horrendous perm in a beauty shop interrogation all in order to ensure that justice is done.book

This engaging debut mystery thoroughly entertains with its very Southern characters and setting. Liv and Di’s long friendship is a highlight of the novel, as they continue to rely on one another for emotional support, a comforting ear, and a place to crash after a long night of drinking. The author also crafts one of the more realistic and enjoyable depictions of a loving, decade-long marriage. Liv and Larry Joe have a very romantic, sexy relationship, but she can also be completely exasperated with his inability to complete one single home renovation project.

This first of the series establishes firm groundwork for future novels, and while here Liv sacrifices much of her party-planning duties for the sake of her investigations, helpful party tips and the always-charming Southern aspects ensure for an entertaining and very humorous read.
